How to plan for summer intensives with pointe shoes

Is your student attending a ballet Summer Intensive program this year? Now that auditions are out of the way, it is time to start making a list of everything you need to bring with you! Planning ahead of time will help make the experience less stressful. Here are some helpful suggestions to make sure your dancer has what they need for the entirety of the program.

If your student is going to be dancing on pointe, prepare for the shoes to break down at a more rapid rate than normal class wear and tear. There is nothing worse than wearing a dead pair of shoes during the peak of training! For beginner pointe students who will do some pointe work, but most of class in slippers, we recommend taking 1 pair of shoes for every 2-3 weeks of intensive. For intermediate/advanced students who will be on pointe for a majority of the day, several days a week, we strongly recommend taking 1 pair of shoes per week. If your intensive is located in a region with high humidity, take extra care in keeping the pointe shoes dry. We recommend starting the shoe ordering process at least 4-6 weeks in advance. This time frame will allow for backorders, special orders, and possible surprise sizing changes. We understand that purchasing pointe shoes in bulk can be quite daunting when it comes to checkout. For that reason, we happily extend a -25% bulk discount for the second or more pair(s) of pointe shoes and accessories.

Foot care and health is so important, yet easy to put on the back burner when you’re dancing so much! Staying healthy during these long days is one of the hardest parts of being at a 4-6 week program. Keep the toenails trimmed, and the feet clean. If blisters occur, keep them dry and try not to drain them. Keep a close inventory of what you keep in your dance bag to care for your feet. Nail clippers, toe tape, extra loose lamb’s wool and a sewing kit are some of the essentials for any dancer. Soaking the feet in an Epsom salt bath at the end of a long day will help you de-stress and it feels amazing!

Last but not least, HAVE FUN! Although Summer Intensives can be intimidating, all of the hard work you’ve put in over the year will pay off tenfold once you’re submersed in a new environment. Being away from home allows you expand your knowledge of the world and meet new people! Going into the experience with an open mind will certainly ease your worries and make the time fly by. We'll be looking forward to hearing about all your time away when you return!
